KidsKultur kicks off the new 2024/2025 season with a special one-off event as part of Art Week Berlin, focusing on the Body, Mind & Soul concept.
Weak for Art Week
On September 14, 2024, the Kulturkids took part in the German premiere of “SOIL”, danced by Sarah Aviaja Hammeken, at KW Institute for Contemporary Art.
KW had expressed concerns in advance: Can children really sit still and watch for 45 minutes? Would they stand up in the middle or get bored? The Kulturkids have no such fears. They are little cultural experts and know how to put adults at ease! That's why they decided in advance to surprise the dancer with flowers. What followed was an all-round successful start. After the premiere, Sarah took her time, accepted her flowers and answered the children's questions on her stage - and it looked as if she wanted to move on with us.
Sorry, Sarah! But we had to keep going: to the Freeletics sports ground to exercise, train with the adults and update our sketchbooks! After all, such an exciting day needs to be regulated and processed.
Achieving educational goals with ease
The educational goals of KidsKultur on the “Mind, Body & Soul” level have more than worked out! The Kulturkids not only proved that they are able to follow a dance performance attentively and with concentration for 45 minutes, but also that they have developed emotional understanding and social intelligence by surprising the dancer Sarah Aviaja Hammeken with flowers.
On the “Mind” level, they showed their cognitive and creative engagement with art by asking questions and reflecting on the performance. The “Body” level was immediately followed by physical activity on the Freeletics sports field, showing that they understood the importance of moving after an intense mental engagement. At the “soul” level, they made a deep emotional connection through interacting with the dancer and experiencing the art, which helped them process what they had seen on a personal and spiritual level.
This day reflects the holistic educational principle of KidsKultur, where intellectual, physical and emotional development go hand in hand.
