What Happened in May?
In May, we used "Modernism" as a theme to engage the children's curiosity and age-appropriate understanding through the history of American art, real-life examples, picture books, illustrations, exhibitions, and activities.
On the "Soul" level, this meant giving the children an awareness and motivation for change and growth.
Modernism Simplifed
Modernism was a complex concept encompassing various aspects of cultural, societal, and technological changes since the late 18th century. The children not only learned about Modernist art but also had the opportunity to apply what they had learned to create their own works.
By incorporating various media (cardboard, paints and pencils, paper, books, iPads, public transportation, etc.) into artistic projects with preschoolers, I supported not only their creative and motor development but also their sensory, cognitive, and social skills. This holistic approach to projects supports children as a whole and better prepares them for future learning and life experiences.
Building sculptures of the Berlin Wall and viewing modern paintings and works at the Berlinische Galerie were on the agenda, as well as exploring American history and art. These topics offered endless opportunities to promote various competencies on the "Mind" level, such as media literacy, aesthetic education, communication, and language. And, of course, a water fight was part of the fun too!
