We are starting the new season with a theme that concerns every child:
Who am I today – and what sides of myself can I still discover?
To kick off the new KidsKultur season, we will visit Galerie Thomas Schulte in Berlin-Mitte.
KidsKultur specializes in giving children access to special spaces and cultural places that, in everyday life at daycare and school, they are often not considered ready for. Museums, galleries, studios and other places from the adult world become spaces for learning and experience. We do not approach children with simplified programs, but trust them to engage with challenging themes, art and new perspectives.
Who am I – and who can I become?
Identity is not fixed. We change, develop and continue to discover new sides of ourselves. Every person has many different facets – some are immediately visible to others, while others we only discover over time.
Inspired by the works of Kerstin Brätsch and Katharina Sieverding, we explore questions such as: Who am I? What makes me who I am? How can I change? And what possibilities do I have to shape myself?
The children do not experience art simply as visitors. They observe, ask questions, develop their own ideas and become creative themselves.
The Gallery and Its Building
Galerie Thomas Schulte was founded in 1991 and presents international conceptual art from the 1960s to the present day.
Since 2006, the gallery has been located in the historic Tuteur House in Berlin-Mitte. The building itself also becomes part of our workshop. We look at where we are, what makes this place special and how buildings and places change over time.
Of particular interest is the gallery’s nine-meter-high Corner Space, with its large, three-part display window. It was designed in 1913 by architect Hermann Muthesius, an important figure in early German modernism and co-founder of the Deutscher Werkbund.
Don’t Just Consume – Create
As always at KidsKultur, we do not simply look at art. The children create their own works inspired by the exhibition.
They do not copy artworks, but develop something new from their observations and their own thoughts.
Mind, Body & Soul
Mind: Discover new themes, expand knowledge of art, architecture and history, and learn and apply methods of observation, thinking, working and presentation.
Body: Create, experiment and stay active. Outdoor activities at nearby playgrounds and sports fields provide plenty of movement and space to play.
Soul: Discover our own perceptions and feelings. Breathing exercises, meditation and mindfulness sessions give children time to slow down and become more aware of themselves.
