What Happened in January?
In January, we explored the "NUDE" exhibition, an international project by Fotografiska featuring 30 artists from 20 different countries. Their works, focusing on Body Politics, challenge traditional concepts of nudity in art and question historical constraints associated with it. The CultureKids were already familiar with the theme of "nude photography," having noted that "it’s like in the museum with many naked statues!"
Fotografiska Team
Unlike many state institutions, the Fotografiska team was very accommodating. They allowed us to explore the exhibition in a child-friendly manner, offering us the opportunity to get close to the artworks, sit on our D'Amico blanket, and spend extra time with a video installation, which allowed the KulturKids infront a video installation that dealt with the black Body and Hair to braid their hair, among other things.
As an exciting bonus the KulturKids had a unique opportunity to visit the Veronica Bar and Restaurant in Berlin before its doors opened to guests. The kids were captivated as they explored the space, discussing the concept of a bar for the first time. They were particularly enchanted by the colorful array of bottles lining the shelves, each one holding the promise of different drinks and experiences.
As they wandered through the restaurant, they admired the meticulously set tables, each one a canvas of elegance. The atmosphere was inviting, and the kids couldn’t resist taking off their shoes to feel more at home. They settled into the plush seats, feeling the warmth of the space envelop them.
With sketchbooks in hand, they began to draw and jot down their impressions, capturing the beauty and excitement of the bar and restaurant. The thoughtful design and vibrant ambiance left a lasting impression, igniting their imaginations and curiosity about the world of hospitality. It was a day filled with wonder, creativity, and a newfound appreciation for the artistry behind dining and social spaces.
A big thank you to the entire Fotografiska team! We will come back very soon.
Mind, Body & Soul
Mind: During the January sessions, we discussed composition and image structure, focusing on the body as both material and medium of expression. The CultureKids engaged in role-playing activities to understand the impact of shedding clothes on identity, social norms, and external perceptions. This exploration expanded their understanding of visual storytelling and artistic expression.
Body: The physical aspect of our activities involved dressing up and later exploring what happens when we take our clothes off, which provided insights into personal identity and social norms. Additionally, we had the opportunity to access spaces usually not open to children, like the Veronika Bar and Restaurant, where the architecture fascinated the CultureKids. This hands-on exploration of space and design enriched their physical and sensory experiences.
Soul: The emotional and spiritual growth came from experiencing art and architecture in new ways. The CultureKids reflected on the history of the buildings and speculated about why people occupy buildings, fostering a deeper connection to their surroundings. Creating our own artwork, experimenting with the Golden Ratio, and preparing for our annual exhibition allowed the CultureKids to express themselves creatively and connect with their inner selves.
